Yurr...She Blows
So right now it is 2:30am, the wind is blowing about 50knot easterly and I have just arrived home. Why you may ask? Well I'll tell you why.
After Bible Study at about 12 Kirk Perry called me and asked me if I would like to go for a night hike, so we did. We went to Swallowtail to enjoy the lovely weather. The wind was blowing so hard it blew the rail off of the bridge! I love the wind, my favorite element of nature. Also when I was driving down the back road, there was a huge tree completely blocking both sides of the road!
Anyway we sat out on the bench, Kirk prayed and it was really neat to think that in the midst of this crazy storm God had control and we were safe. I am reminded of a sermon I heard once while I was at Bethany.
There is an occasion in the Bible where Jesus is teaching, and after teaching, Jesus SENDS his disciples on ahead of Him in the boat. Notice Jesus does not go, but sends his disciples. During their trip a storm arises. Mark's Gospel says they were straining at the oars, John's Gospel said they had rowed about 3-3 1/2 miles. (How long do you suppose that would take) during the fourth watch of the night Jesus comes to them walking on the water. And we know how is roles from there, Peter gets cocky, steps out, sinks, Jesus saves the day because He is awesome. When Jesus steps back into the boat it says in Matthew that the wind died down.
Now I see the storms in this passage as the storms of life. Notice that Jesus sent the disciples into the boat. So when they were in the middle of the storm, they were in the middle of God's will for them at the same time. I think its pretty simple how it applies here, we can be in storms in life and in God's will at the same time.
Next, "they were straining at the oars". Now this would assume they were straining at the oars for most of the 3 miles. But why bother? Why would they?...Sometimes the rowing, the perseverance isn't to get through the storm, but it is to just keep the boat afloat until Jesus gets there. Could it be that sometimes in our life we need to just persevere until God comes and fulfills his plan for us? We need to persevere so when we have done the will of God we will get what He promised (Heb 10:36). The pointless rowing, isn't pointless, its just keeping our hope alive, our boat afloat til Jesus gets there.
And finally and most importantly, when Jesus steps into the boat, the winds died down. The storm seemed to be no more. God will rescue us from the storms of this life. He will! All that rowing, all that persevering, all that praying, all that pain that seems so much to be in vain. It is not in vain! God will conquer in the end. God is in control. The oars get heavier, the waves seem to get bigger with every second, but God is in control. It is possible to be in a storm and in God's will. But know that He will come and calm the storm.

ah! Thank you for your insight.. you just basically saved my life
in some aspect or another.
We got sprayed. Good post Scott. Maybe you should preach it sometime.
funny kirk... i was thinking the same thing... i think he even had a good ole 3 point wesleyan sermon... way to go scott... you are the man... i love this deep side, i also heart the funny side... good words preacha man...

I love the rowing against the wind part...a great analogy for spiritual warfare. The storm is wearing us out, and even though we might not gain any ground/water, we have to keep going just to stay where we are...And how awesome to know that Jesus, though he may not have rescued us from the waves, is right there, walking towards us. Oh, and I just had another great thought (great as in God is great, not I am great and have great thoughts kind of great)...Jesus just walks on out through the midst of the storm and never falters...the same storm that sucks the snot out of us has absolutely no effect on Him. You should preach it sometime...from a boat on the beach.
I meant that you should preach your message, not mine...
PS
Thanks for taking me home first. At least that way there was someone left to pray for your safe return.
Well thank you all for sharing how this blog effected you. It really helps confirm things and she me just how God works in cool ways.
ie.
Last night I was having a crappy night...like really crappy times a million = not hiking mood!
But something told me to go for that hike, when kirk asked, and I knew I would have a good time. Now...that hike was the inspiration for this post. In other words no hike...no post.
I actually have two other posts written and saved for a later date. One of which I was going to post today however, in light of the events of last night wrote and posted that post at 3am this morning instead of the other one.
Since posting today's post I have recieved the comments above (cool). And I recieve an instand Message today from someone telling me how this post helped and reminded, and encouraged them. So this is all a pretty cool coincidence eh?
Well with God, there are no coincidences!
I saved scottie's life???well i think it was scottie...cool
Now as far as speaking this sometime...from a boat on the beach.
Well I think if you look in Matthew 14 at the passage which precedes this story, we have a little problem. Cause somewhere in there we have to feed five thousand people with two cod fillets and five dishes of Sex in a pan. (I think thats scriptural??)
I love you and your blogness Scott

you did not save my life... not sure who that is, but i would feel safe if you had to... i mean, you are taking a course right?
scottie
Ok, so i figured it out. It was Tiffinee. I'm glad I could save her. But ya I am fully capable of saving just about anyone, with my full year plus one course of college education.
Hey Scott, its caleb. I'm going to be honest you let me down. I'm still holding out strong on the whole no blog, no facebook, no myspace thing but you caved under pressure. The bible talks about being set apart you know... I'm sure it is talking about blogging as well. I didn't read much but that picture it pretty sweet I'm a little upset about missing the huge wind storm but at the same time the beach down here in Barbados is treating me well. See you all in a couple of months.

Ah Caleb eh. Boy how are the hardships of "ministry" treating you? Ya I know I am a sell out, but hey I'm a loser who has nothing else to do, so why not just start selling my soul? It just seemed like the thing to do. Start putting pieces of my worthless existence on the internet.
Thats the story and I'm sticking to it. Its good to hear from ya man, keep in touch some more.
God gave me an amazing day today. A chance for healing, a chance for expression, a chance for hope, a chance to enjoy the company of a friend. I can't thank Him enough for today. It's a perfect example of how He is in control in the storms of this life. God is good! He has been good to me so much in my life, and I'm glad that He didn't stop yesterday, and won't stop tomorrow. His blessings are many!
Well Scott, I must say your blogs have surprised me and blessed me all at the same time. I ignorantly assumed they would basically Seinfield quotes along with Arrested Development quotes, but man was I wrong. I guess that's what happens when we assume things. Anyway, awesome insight and I actually did save Scottie's life! P.S. You may have inspired me to update my blog! Stay tuned and I will try to keep up. Lov Ya
I am so glad to know that Kirk Perry came to save your otherwise crappy night. Thanks. Glad to see I cheered you up. Bite me.

scottie "too lazy to sign in" leighton
PP, don't promise us a blog unless you are going to come good for it!
Well it gives me great pleasure that you assumed wrong. So many pre-concieved ideas of me. And ya I guess we all do know assuming does. Oh well looks like I got the last laugh this time. lol.
P.S. Thanks for commenting!
Scottie I am only one person and Scott I did make a new post so there. Oh Snap! I also joined facebook all at the same time.
